What a formation count is, and what it is not
These counts come from new business filings recorded by the Florida Department of State, attributed to the county on each filing. They track formations, the number of brand-new entities. They are not a count of businesses trading, and they say nothing about revenue or headcount.
Florida registers hundreds of new companies every business day, so the seven-day and thirty-day windows give a current read on where activity is concentrating rather than a historical one.
Why the most recent fortnight keeps changing
Florida does not publish a filing on the day it is recorded. A new formation typically appears in the state's daily file five to six days after its own filing date, and the tail can stretch to two weeks.
A confirmed count covers days old enough for that tail to have landed, so it stops moving. A still-publishing count keeps climbing. Both are shown separately here rather than blended, because blending them would make last week look like a downturn every single week.
